How Wilmette Library Has Outgrown Its Space

Photographic evidence here supports the claim of the library directors that their building, constructed in 1904, is now far too small for the village. Their proposal, to replace the present structure with something a little nearer the required size, is part of the Plan for a Better Wilmette which will go to referendum Saturday, February 14. (All photos by Harvey J. Steffens) This corner of the library (left) is all that remains of the reference and study space which has been reduced from five tables and 40 chairs to two tables and 14 chairs. On week-day evenings during the winter, all these seats are taken and people are standing. Unless some enlargement is made, within the next year and a half, these few tables and chairs will have to be eliminated to make room for book stacks, thus reducing the Wilmette library to a lending library entirely.
Photo at right: Stacks occupy the area behind the loan desk. Recently stacks were added to the room at the right. This has relieved the congestion for the time being. However, librry officials estimate that present stack space will take care of book additions for the next year and a half at which time the situation will become critical again. No further stack room is available except that occupied by the remaining two tables.
