One thing alone stands In the way of the harbor being given to Evans- ton and it is believed that this can be overcome with little trouble. The mil- lionaires of Highland Park are exert- ing all their influence to have the har- bor located at that place but the local conditions are much the better and it is believed the government will set this point. The fact that there is not a harbor of refuge between Chicago and Wau- kegan, a distance of twenty-five miles, led the government to start looking for the best possible location. The lake traffic, by both pleasure crafts and the large steamers, between the two har- bors is as heavy as any place on the lake. This together with the fact that Gross Point is one of the most danger- ous points on Lake Michigan hag proven beyond a doubt that" such a har- bor is a necessity. When the Highland Park men heard of the plan to make a harbor they at once started boosting their town. They subscribed $10,000 to be added to the government appropriation. Local men interested in the locating of the har- bor here are of the opinion that the same amount could be raised In this city Just as quickly as it was in High- land Park. There are many points of advantage that Evanston has over Highland Park and for this reason it Is believed that they will secure the harbor. In the first place they have the life saving station. With the harbor here the crew could handle a 36-foot power boat that would be able to take them out in any kind of weather. Also the closeness of Gross Point to Evanston. If the harbor is guilt, it will be where the life saving station IS located. Several wealthy residents of Evans- ton living along the lake shore are showing a great deal of Interest In the plan and will lend their effort to se- cure the harbor. Captain Jensen of the life saving station is heartily la favor of the hajehor and will lend all the aid he can% the movement UNABLE TO CET WACEI Fort Sheridan is feeling the effect* of an incipient monetary panic. Oft^ cers are acting as "bankers" to the men in the ranks. Merchants depen- dent on the trade of the men of war are in a state of hard times. The "ghost" baa not "walked" since June 3. .."."* ' Nine hundred of the regular! are at the maneuvers at Sparta, Wis. The majority of the 360 men at the fort are "rookies," to whom the absence of a pay day is a near tragedy. The appropriation from which the troops get their money has been ex- hausted.
