::3*»..:.-HW<w PliiiilS^^SI |» GREEK GUSH Prof. John A. Scott of North- western University and Harrison B. Riley Clash in Politics. BOTH ARE READY WRITERS £;,'-'. If: â- u m "When Greek meets Greek then comes the tug of war." They hare met, and the war now Is on. Fortu- nately it is a verbal one, and conse- quently no casualties have been re- ported, neither have any words been lost. The combatants in this conflict of words are Prof. John A. Scott, head of the department-of Greek at North- western university, and Harrison B Riley, president of the Chicago Title * Trust company. It did not take much to bring the principals together, simply for the reason that the professor is a rabid Bull Mooser, while Mr. Riley Is strongly inclined to the belief that it is well to leave "good enough alone/' The other day while reading this paper, as is his daily habit, the learned professor spied on the first page a fac-Bimlle of the following let- ter from the pen of the banker: Oct. 19, 1912. To the Editor:â€"I am for Taft. I believe the radical defection front the Republican party is as unjustifi- able as the Fremont revolt against Lincoln in 1864, as the Greeley boj£ in 1872. They all arise from an en- thusiastic desire for speed even at the expense of justice and efficiency. Fremont thought Lincoln was too •low in handling the Rebellion Greeley wanted reconstruction of the rebellious states in a few months. ll am opposed to spreading sixty- four varieties of issues before the people to be absorbed or rejected in toto. Most of the radical principles are exclusively state issues and .many of them are in force in Illinois and other states today. I am opposed to the judicial or any other recall. I believe the recall ot judicial decisions to be fatal to any jUit government. It is idle to say that the people should decide what the constitutions mean. These in- struments are plainly drawn. Their meaning is rarely subject to doubt and if a doubt arises it must be re- solved through Btudy and research a*d not by campaign, oratory. Harrison B. Riley. Hastily calling his stenographer he •dictated the following to the editor of this newspaper: Oct 28,1912. gdltor of Lake Shore News: -No one respects the sound business sense of Mr. Harrison B. Riley more than I do, but when he says in his letter, "Why I Am for Taft," that he not believe in "The judicial re- [1 or any other recall," he simply dees not mean it. If a man in the and Trust company were writ* guarantee policies on bad titles twere bribed to betray the com- y, would Mr. Riley say, "I am sorry, •# sorry, but there is no way to help It, llfjl are ruined, as I do not believe in the judicial or any other recall?" He would not, but as the sensible man H that he is, he would recall that man In ten minutes. Why should the pee- j| pie not have the power which every /business firm must have, that is, to ^d^charge faithless servants. Tours truly, Johii A Scott tereupon the well kuuwo Chi- cago banker, after perusing the lines by the Greek authority of university had this to say in re- in business demand (and are entitled to receive) employment tor definite periods. If they are dishonest they are entitled to a fair trial before a disinterested tribunal, and In my judgment, competent men and women cannot be obtained to serve the peo- ple in important offices on less fair terms. I would not discharge an office boy on only ten minutes' consideration, even though the home team was win- ning and he claimed an extraordinary death rate in his family. Harrison B. Riley. Fortunately, Theodore Roosevelt had nothing to eay in this controversy between these two beloved citisens of our fair city, for if he had one or the other would now be wearing the pin of the Ananias club. And in the meantime the world and prosperity merrily move along, tbsmm w»v»*!.*iwj».......... _..,.. - , â-  i^jrfl^iJiiS^ ss wjw-u.i, ujju L^i\xm)}jpimmmmm Our_„ Full Set T- Testh Heavy Go\d Fin.
