12 THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1920 March Winds Bring mm Spring-And Smoke Health Commissioner E. E. Moore Notifies Business Men that Smoke ..:...;».â- , Nuisance Is Dangerous to ?N^- ,. . ... Health LOCAL BOY WINS BERTH ^ ON M. A. C. BASKET SQUAD s; To many residents of Wilmette the llinesâ€"ofâ€""When March winds blow" "â€"contain nothing of the poetical but Ion the other hand bring considerable Jismoke. At least, if the complaints fthat are made daily to Commissioner iof Health E. E. Moore are any indi- tcation, the March winds are decided- ?lyl a nuisance as the smoke of the 'village business district is whirled in clouds into the adjoining homes. Which brings this story to the principal matter of discussion in the offices of the Health Commissioner. For some time a number of the business houses in the vicinity of the village hall have failed, through carelessness, to check the great volumes of smoke which pour from the chimneys of the buildings, al- though this matter is provided for in a village ordinance. The ordinance holds that such smoke, when issuing in the proportions that it does from local business houses, is a nuisance and the offenders are subject to a fine ranginging from $5 to $200. The health department has con- stantly called this matter to the at- tenion of business men, many of whom have taken steps to remedy the smoke nuisance, but a number of others have failed to respond to the request. Dr .Moore declared that, although there has been some im- provement, steps must be taken by the other offenders to remedy the the matter, or the village may be compelled to resort to legal proceed- ings in order to secure compliance of the law. Dr. Moore pointed out the fact that the smoke, especially at this time of the year, is decidedly irritating to persons troubled with colds, coughs, and other throat ailments. He urged the business men who have failed to check smoke from their place of business, t-o do so immediately, as a matter of civic interest in the health of the community. : 'WARE EVANSTON Attention of north shore motorists :;has been called to the motor traffic violation campaign now being con-, ducted in Evanston. Each day for ( 'the past nine days the southern sub- 'urb's police have brought in scores | ?of motorists who have failed^ to ob- I ^ serve the boulevard regulations of ?stopping before crossing the boule- vard. More than 100 arrests have been made so far and the Evanston police are planning to maintain the pace until motorists become more ' cautious. Already a number of res- idents of the township have adopted the sloganâ€""beware of Evanston". A number of them have paid fines, fol- lowing their apprehension in the sub- urb. ANOTHER^ VIOLATION Mrs. Clare Sullivan, 336 Gregory avenue, was fined $5 and costs in Evanston on Monday for failing to observe the boulevard ordinance in that city. She was apprehended at Davis Street and Ridge avenue. Harold M. Finlay, 816 Lake Avenue, Shows Ability on All-fresh Team at Michigan Aggie School Information from the Michigan Agricultural College publicity service received this week states that Harold M. Finlay, son of Peter R. Finlay, 816 Lake avenue, has signalized his opening year at the school by win- ning a place on the all-fresh basket- ball squad. Finlay therefore will be in line for a place on Aggie varsity teams of the future if he continues to improve in form. He is taking the agricultural course. Because of the great demands made this year upon the basketball floor in the Aggie gymnasium, and because of the recent illness of Freshman coach Frimodig, the first year men have not had as good a chance to develop as have former freshmen teams. Nevertheless they have held their own against strong state teams. The number of men engaged in basketball at M. A. C. this winter has been urfusually large. Besides the varsity and all-fresh there has been interclass ami intersociety competi- tion. Numberless games are played in addition to these series, and any- •one who has any sort of a hankering for the game has found a chance to play. KENILWORTH GETS AN EARLY START IN SPEEDERS DRIVE 1601 Elmwood avenue, following an interesting romance. The second time it was instrument- al in furnishing officer Ley with an exceptionally good start in the 1920 chase of speeders. Thrice has officer Ley arisen early and thrice has he raptured a speeder. He started Mon- day, getting the jump on other motor- cycle policemen in the township. First was Jack Robbins, son of Frank Rob- bins, 730 Elmwood avenue, Wlimette. charged with 37 miles an hour on .Sheridan road. Then came Robert Wahiete of Highland Park, spinning merrily along at about 33 miles an hour. The third speeder was Harold St-one of Winnetka. Mr. Stone, after a six block chase, explained that the reason he was bowling along at 45 miles per was because of being late at his Chicago office. All the cases were heard yesterday in the court of Justice of the Peace Arthur S. McKenna of Kenilworth. Going To Move? Read Page 7 GO TO CHURCH SUNDAY DANCING ^^Tfr AT JONES' HALL.
