THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1920 NEWTR1ERPLAYS0AK PARK TO 3-3 BATTLE Teams Evenly Matched as Stager and Parker Shine For Their Respect- ive Aggregations In one of the most thrilling grid- iron battles ever staged on New Trier field Oak Park and New Trier High schools Saturday afternoon struggled to a 3-3 tie. The teams were very evenly match- ed and as a result no touchdowns were scored. The points were made by Parker for New Trier who^ drop- kicked over the goal posts in the third quarter from the 35-yard line and by Steger of the visitors who made a place kick in the final quarter for the tying markers. Steger failed to scintilate in Saturday's game as he has in other contests this year. He made sever- al good dashes and at one time brought the crowd to its feet with a thrilling end run. Parker Furnishes Thrill His exhibition was no greater than that of Parker, Rand and Wienecke of the local high school eleven. Parker featured by his wonderful kick from the north side of the field. Rand and Wienecke starred by mak- ing some pretty end runs and line bucks. The latter's punting was an- other pleasing sight of the game. Early in the first quarter New Trier made a march down the field and were within fifteen yards of the goal when a fumble gave the ball to Oak Park. It was the only moment of the first half when a touchdown threat- ened. In the second half Oak Park awakened to the fact that they had a real team to play and New Trier's line was forced to extend itself to hold the rival aggregation. It was in the third quarter when Steger made his great run. After Parker had scored three points New Trier kicked off. Oak Park took the ball to the fifty yard line and by making several good line plunges made twenty yards. It was during this drive that Meese of the visitors was injured so severely that he was forced to leave the game. Steger Shows Speed On the thirty-yard line Steger was given the ball for an end run. He shook off several tacklers and then broke away for the goal line with an open field in front of him. It looked like a sure touchdown for a moment when suddenly Varney broke from the crowd of players and pursued the man who has tied the world's record for the 50-yard dash. Just before Steger reached the goal line Varney leaped an caught him around the knees throwing the runner so violently that the ball dropped from his arms and a New Trier player promptly dropped on it. It was the play that saved the tussle for the north shore lads. Thereafter the goal was not threat- ened until the final quarter when the Oak Parkers made another march but were stopped on the eighteen yard line. A New Trier back was penalized fifteen yards at this critical juncture for being in motion before the ball putting the oval on the three-yard mark. Wienecke punted and Steger "heeled" the ball anl called for a free place kick. He kicked the ball squarely between the goal posts and thereby tied the count. The outcome of the game was en- tirely unexpected by Chicago sport- ing writers who predicted a victory for coach Thistlewaite's outfit. New Trier journeys to La Grange Saturday afternoon in what is ex- pected to be an easy victory judging by that team's 1920 showing. The following Saturday a stiff battle is promised at Deerfield. The Highland Park squad is considered as strong as the New Trier eleven and lots of action is promised. Deerfield meets Oak Park in the last game of the season two weeks after they meet the north shore boys. C. H. When the same thing hap- pens on six or eight nearby streets, served from the same cable terminal, there must be new main cables from terminal boxes to the exchange. Such increases from several localities soon call for additions to switchboard and terminal room facilities. Finally a new exchange, with its costly equipment; must be built, and extensive re-distribution made of the outside plant. These are some of the elements which enter into the cost of supply- ing telephone service to growing communities. CHICAGO TELEPHONE COMPANY C. H.
