THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1920 JANS RENDERS BIG SERVICE TO HARDING North Shore Automobile Leader Or-' gunizet First Voters" Club in Harding-Coolidge Campaign According: to E. M. Elliot, 623 Sher- idan road, Evanston, associate man- ager, of. Senator. Harding's, front porch campaign, "one of the most dynamic and, at the same time, picturesque personalities developed during the present presidential cam- paign," is Peter N. Jans of Evanston. In a letter to The Lake Shore News Mr. Elliot tells of tne unique service rendered by Mr. Jans to the republican party and to Senator Harding, by his work in the organ- ization of First Voters clubs in all parts of the country, and making a pilgrimage with 6,800 pupils to the front porch of the republican candi- date in Marion, Ohio, October 18. In his letter, Mr. Elliot said: "As a resident of Evanston, I feel that it is our duty to recognize the service Peter N. Jans, the golfer, and the. automobile man, of Eyjmston, is rendering to his party and to War- ren G. Harding. "As associate manager of Mr. Harding's front porch campaign, it became necessary for me to reach the youthâ€" the flowerâ€"the first voters of the nation, and to reach them in a language that they would understand. "The problem, I assure you, was quite a complex one, and it seemed to me that this sort of thing necessi- tated the brain and the energy of an individual as point of contact, of one who knew, in a first hand way, the young man and the young womanâ€" the first voter. Goes Out aa Organizer "After a considerable amount of workâ€"casting about as it wereâ€"de- cided to enlist the services of one Peter N. Jans, and after a number of conferences with the gentleman, and, after showing him that it was his national and patriotic duty to serve the republican party and War- ren G. Harding, I succeeded in enthusing Peter N. Jans to a degree where he not only agreed to, but actually gave up his business and went into the field as an organizer, "Mr. Jans has created First Voters clubs all over the nation. Mr. Jans has traveled hundreds and thousands of miles, Ins made scores of talks to student bodies, to faculties, director- ates and what not, in the schools, colleges and universities of the land. Mr. Jans not only has set up organi- zations, but he returned to them and has directed Iheir functioning. As an example, Mr. Jans took some 6,800 pupils from some 2,100 schools to Marion, Ohio, on Monday, October 18, and with these pupils, he took 11 school bands, hundreds of automo- biles, banners and paraphernalia. "Senator Harding has said, in my presence, to Mr. Jans: "I appreciate, Mr. Jans, the work you are doing more thna words can tell, and I hard- ly believe you realize the great work you are doing, for you are starting these young folks off on the right fool. You are teaching them to look ahead and to think for themselvesâ€" and, surely, this is an age of all times when the young man and woman must think for himself. Address to Harding In presenting the delegation of 6,800 students to the republican can- didate at his front porch in Marion, Mr. Jans said: Sen-it or Harding. Assembled here are "First Voters" of Ohio and many other states, under a banner emblematic of strengthâ€" vitalityâ€"and good moral character, portrayed in the various athletic formations. Knowing of your devo- tion to athletics, and of your support to college lifeâ€"the "First Voters" of Fred Nitto Upholstering, Drapery Cabinet Work Furniture Repairing Mattress Renovating and Window Shades Telephone Wil. 474 and 2430 thi3 country welcome you as their leader, We call attention to our bannersâ€" whose inscriptions announce to the entire world that you are our ac- cepted director.â€"Golfersâ€"millions in numberâ€"the delegation of golfers here send this message, "A Victory Drive for Harding and Coolidge".â€" Baseball players and the many fans of our national gameâ€"are "Hitting the Ball for Harding and Coolidge". Football players, heroes of college life, are "Smashing the Defense for Harding and Coolidge". Tennis play- ers and the beautiful formation of girls, are "Serving for Harding and Coolidge". And so it is with every other branch of athleticsâ€"full of courage, awaiting victory. Senator Harding, these "First Voters"â€"your athletesâ€"are like players awaiting final instruction be- fore the gameâ€"are ready for your charge.
