FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1921 In Case Of A Railroad Strike If there should be any general stoppage of freight service as the re- sult of a railroad strike, motor truck ransp6rtation_win^Jiaye to be used to a large extent. Unless the same is carefully planned for in advance, many communities are likely to suffer. With the enormous fleets of motor trucks ready for service, it should be possible in case oLemergency to pro- cure an ample distribution of all foods, also of fuel. These basic essentials must be provided and they can be with proper foresight. It is particularly essential to secure the usual supplies of milk. As this comes in most places from sections not far away from the place of consumption, most of this food could be brought into cities and towns by motor truck. In case of such ' an emergency, passenger service may have to be given up for a snort time to make sure that essential freight is moved. _Travelers could use automobiles on all except long journeys. The rights of the public in this matter should not be yielded merely as the result of fear of what would happen in case of strike. up. Formerly it was an honor for a man to labor, and the harder a man toiled, the more his neighbors respect- ed him. Now it appears, in order to gain respect in many trades, you have to be careful not to work too hard, or do more than the next man. The world has just suffered a prop- erty loss through the war of $169,000,- 000,000, plus an expenditure of $186,- 000,000,000 for the conduct of the war. It will be many years before these losses are made up. The only way to offset them is for everyone to take hold and work hard. If people try to work as little as possible or do less than a full week's work, they consti- tute a drag on the whole community. The practical effect of a five day working week, is to make the work of such a trade cost just one sixth more. The less people work the more jobless people there will be. One reason for the large amount of unem- ployment the past year, is that work has cost so high that people could not afford to have it done. This seemed surprising. One would think that honest industry is always commendable, and that a man who was diligently at work painting a building on Saturday morning, would attract much more favorable comment than if he was loafing around his place or tearing around the country in an automobile. The man's feeling, it appeared, was that if he was, seen working on Satur- day, that he would appear to be dis- loyal to the rules of his craft, r ~.â€"Thisâ€"notion^â€"seemedâ€"contraryâ€"to. the splendid old ideas of industry j through which this country was built ^^ Undertaker I am now in business for my- self, conducting the ONLY undertaking establishment in Wilmette.
