THE LAKE SHORE NEWS. FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1923 '^M- AT the morning meeting of the Wilmette Woman's Club, February 28. Mr. Kahler, of New Trier, spoke on the Boy's Problems. He empha- ised the fact that the object in all the school's work is the moral develop- ment, mental and physical growth be- ing only indices. He spoke earnestly of the desire on the part of the Fac- ulty to know and co-operate with the parents of all the students, and closed with a glowing tribute to the fine qualities of the boys and girls whom he has worked with and for during his eleven years at New Trier. The afternoon meeting was in charge of the Young Woman's Aux- iliary, and was opened with piano solos by Miss Pauline Pettibone and a group of songs by Miss Marjorie Mann, which were received with much pleasure, both young women re- sponding to encores. Miss Mary Bartelme gave a short talk on the work of the Mary Home at 1102 Elm- wood Avenue Evanston, invited all present to visit it, and told of the pleasure and gratitude of the girls over the articles sent them by the Philanthropy department. Mrs. Bart- lett spoke briefly for Infant Welfare, and asked that each member be re- sponsible for the health of one child for one year at a cost of ten dollars. The lecturer of the day was Prof. F. B. Snyder of Northwestern, whc spoke on Modern Novels and Nov elties. He considers the novel an im- portant factor in moulding public opinion, and deplored the poor qual- ity of much of the current fiction, al- though emphasizing the fact that pop- ularity is not necessarily mediocrity. The three essentials for a good novel. mental Truthfulness and Good Style, in his opinion, are Interest, Funda- the vote of the average intelligent reader determining literary merit. Mr. R. E.
