|||p|;|:;fe2||l|^ ^^fflilioli:iiif pmAVft APRIL 27, 1923 glfil SERVICE, Public Asked to Make Special :.........Appeal The postal business of the United r Statesâ€"the biggest business in the countryâ€"has increased 28 percent .since October 1, 1922 and, consequent- ly, the money appropriated by Con- gress for use by the Postal Depart- ment has been exhausted for the fiscal year necessitating a curtail- ment in the delivery service.. Car- riers must complete their work with- in the 8-hour period each day, in- cluding their work inside the offices, as well as that on the streets. .That, in a nutshell, is the gist of the subject matter discussed at the convention of Illinois Postmasters at 3^^ringfield_last- week, attended -hy= ^yl^toetiv,, postmaster Josephs E. ;^v;?:Sfiantz./ 'â- *"",.. Clerks Hold Sessions There were in fact four conven- tions at Springfield last week, com- -• prising four groups: the Clerks, the Carriers, the Railway Mail Clerks and the Postmasters. Separate con- ventions were held Thursday morn- ing. The open convention for ail groups was held Thursday afternoon - and the postmasters gathered in con- ference on Friday morning. It was the first convention at which postal employes were permitted to offer criticism and many logical re- â- v;r-"?iorms,"';.were recommended by the xlerks and carriers as well as by the 3~ ;|p6straasters. 4 j; i ,jt was found at the convention that the same conditions obtaining in Wil- fmette* where curtailment of carrier Service has been felt, exists in every part of the state and throughout the country. Clerks and carriers are put- ting in overtime? work, without ,.#$* numeration, in the interest of help- ing itne~-s^mc#%rrh^ Promised Relief Here Postmaster Shantz announced this week that he had requested the de- partment at Washington to Provide for more carriers at Wilmette^ The department, he says, has assured him that the Wihnette office will be taken, care of about July 1. When this is done the residents in the southwest Trortkm-of the village who are not now receiving carrier service,â- will b<? given that service . when additional carriers are allowed. Improvement of the mail servcie can be assured if the citizens of the country miake a strong appeal to their Congressmen for favorable action on appropriations adequate to give the best possible service to the public, it is generally agreed. The matter wilt find considerable opposition in certain quarters, it isjsaid, and strong public sentiment in favor of improved service wilt be necessary to bring ^tbout the much needed improvement,: Congressman Carl Chindblom has fought valiantly for better postal service for this district, but he needs the support of his constituents in this important fight.
