So pronounced is the opposition to the boulevarding of Central avenue, except with residents interested in property along that thoroughfare, that the project seems certain of defeat at the polls on Tuesday next.
The fact that Harry J. Hack, 1228 Gregory avenue; L. S. Becker, 105 Fifth street, and W. S. Freeman, 711 Lake avenue, are to be elected to the village board to succeed C. C. Schultz, F. D. Buckman and R. S. Baker, which means the overthrow of Oscar I. Schmidt in the control of village affairs, seems to be a matter of little import to the voter. Interest in that phase of the coming election passed two weeks ago when the nominations closed and President Schmidt was defeated in his fight to maintain his candidates, R. S. baker, chairman of the public service committee, and F. D. Buckman, chairman of the fire committee, in office. Mr. Buckman saw the trend of events early, and withdrew his candidacy, whereupon the old guard swept the field.
In the voting in the village on Tuesday last, Oscar W. Schmidt was defeated in the race for republican committeeman in the Eighth and Ninth precincts by W. B. Davies. Out of the 162 votes polled in those divisions jointly, Schmidt secured 32 in all.
Harry Hopp defeated Paul Schroeder for the democratic nomination in the Llewelyn Park district; L. [Lewis] B. Springer was elected on the republican ticket in the same division; Joseph Shantz got the nomination in the Tenth precinct (west of the C & N.W. R.R.) [Chicago and Northwestern Railroad] as did Harry Fowler on the republican in the Eighth. D. M. Mickey was elected on the democratic in the Tenth.
