Wilmette's oldest native, Joseph Braun, dies at 101

Joseph Braun of 2500 Greenwood Av. in Wilmette died Feb. 1 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Mr. Braun, 101, was a life-long resident of the village and became the oldest living native born resident.


Joseph built his home at 1134 Illinois Rd. in 1893. Mr. Braun celebrated his 101st birthday on June 2, 1975.

He is survived by three sons, Louis of Tucson, Ariz., Clarence of Northfield and Martin of Wilmette; three daughters, Adeline Wickless of Glenview, Josephine Tontsch of Chicago and Lorraine Woodal of Chicago; 23 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and three great, great grandchildren.



Mr. Braun was one of three brothers. The others, Bernard and Adam, each lived into their 90s. Their grandfather, German pioneer Bernard Braun, settled in the Gross Point area in 1844.
