- The shortage of sugar seriously affects canning in Wilmette households. The failure of the sugar beet crop in the west and the loss of many tons of sugar at sea makes it imperative that Wilmette housewives turn the the Canning Kitchen in the Central School conducted by the Food Conservation Committee of the Wilmette Guard. Women may have their vegetable and fruit supplies dried free of charge. Men of the village have been asked to conside that corn syrup, molasses and sugar are used to flavor chewing tobacco.
