Blair Cook, of Alchemy Coffee House, 416 Linden Ave., was surprised to learn that Winnetka salesman, John Kurtz, has a lease on the long vacant retail space in the Linden el station, and plans to sell coffee in paper cups from a concession stand there. Kurtz has painted a "Spillin' the Beans" sign on the window of the el station, at 351 Linden Ave. There will be no seating. He says he's finalizing a deal to buy the sit-down coffee shop of the same name at 1154 Central Ave., from the Dahl family, and use the name for both businesses. Kurtz needs a village of Wilmette special use permit and a technical zoning variance similar to those Cook received about three years ago. The Zoning Board, which has recommended approval of Kurtz' request, has heard testimony by Cook and Dimitri Kapitan, owner of Mrs. D's restaurant, also nearby, concerning the damage the additional competition would do to their businesses.
