Announcement of the determination of Secretary of War Garrison to close a large number of the army posts which have been maintained for many years, because of the menace which it implies toward the existance of Fort Sheridan, is regretted by all the cities and towns lying north from Chicago and even by Chicago itself.
For years the army post in Fort Sheridan has been a matter of pride to the people of the vicinity. In the days of its prime, when large numbers of soldiers were stationed there, the well kept grounds and quarters of the post were viewed with interest by residents of Chicago and nearby towns as well as by visitors to the metropolis of the Middle West. In recent years, teh force at Fort Sheridan has been materially depleted and a portion of the splendor of the post has waned, but for the sake of the glory that might again be restored we regret the threatened removal of the troops from their quarters in our vicinity, should that course be ultimately decided upon by the Secretary and President Wilson.
The attitude of Chicago and the nearer neighbors of the post is in nowise changed from that which obtained when the Chicago Association of Commerce gave the land upon which the post is located to the government, a fact which we hope will be of weight when reasons are considered to decide the fate of the existence of Fort Sheridan as an Army post. The fact that Chiago, the second city in the country, desires the presence of the government forces near at hand should be worthy, at least, of consideration.- Featured Link
