- There will be no school Monday, Memorial Day.
• The last day of school is scheduled for June 6, for seventh-graders only. Dismissal time is 10:55 a.m.
• The eighth-grade field trip to Great America is scheduled for June 3.
• The following Wilmette Junior High School students were awarded medals for their projects and/or research papers in the final competition of the Illinois Junior Academy of Science's fair May 2 and 3 at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana:
Amanda Nguyen ("Growing Grass in Different Media") gold for her project and bronze for her paper; Helen Kim ("Hungry? Grab an Orange") gold for her project and paper; Charlotte Franklin and Julie Jackson ("Round 1: Short Term Memory vs. Age") gold for their project and paper, Christina Tsai ("Calories: How do they Compare") gold for her project and paper; Evelyn No ("Various Soaps vs. Plant Growth and Condition") silver for her project and gold for her paper: Emily Avrick ("Side Preferences") gold for her paper; Joe Figura ("How to Build a Strong Levee") silver for his project; Jiham Lee ("Where's Waldo") gold for his project and paper; Joanne Lee ("To Die or Not to Die") gold for her project and paper, Jeff Salvadore ("Mass or Magnetism") gold for his project and silver for his paper; David Whitcomb ("Cricket Color Vision") gold for his project and bronze for his paper.
In addition, several students received special recognition at either the state or regional competitions: Christina Tsai, Best Paper in State Competition and special award for Best Female Chemistry Project at the regional competition; Helen Kim, Best Project in Chemistry Category at the regional competition and an invitation to the Intel Challenge; Evelyn No, Best Project in Botany Category at the regional competition and Best Paper at the regional competition and an invitation to the Intel Challenge; Charlotte Franklin and Julie Jackson, invitations to the Intel Challenge.
The students have been working since September under the guidance of eighth-grade science teacher Ron Scheade and seventh-grade science teacher Steve Galligan researching, designing and conducting their experiments and writing research papers on their science topics. - Date of Publication
