The unlucky experience of being arrested twice within two weeks after he had [illegible] as Santa Claus the morning before Christmas to a number of crossing policemen caused R. H. Polenske, an artist residing at [illegible] Tenth street, Wilmette, to declare that hereafter he probably would choose another route and dodge Evanston in his daily trips to and from Chicago to his suburban home. Palenske was fined $5 and costs Friday night by Police Magistrate Boyer for passing a street car while passengers were being discharged. However, the payment of the fine and costs was suspended after an explanation was given that the gears in the auto were not working properly and the passing of the car was unavoidable.
Makes Friends Quickly
Palenske, due to his long newspaper experience with the Chiago American and other Hearst publications, has a [illegible] of making friends wherever he goes, particularly among the police. But some way he cannot make good with the Evanston coppers, try as he may. Two weeks ago he was arrested by Patrolman Leo Luckin on a speeding charge. On Wednesday evening he was taken in custody by Officer William Lanning for passing a street car at Main Street while passengers were being discharged. On that morning he had distributed packages of perfectly good 10 cent cigars to all the [unclear] watchmen between here and the loop. Then on his return trip, for an unavoidable accident, he was taken in custody by Lanning.
Didn't Worry Him But the sketch artist was not the least perturbed or ruffled over his experience and after being released in [unclear] Boyer's court, went into the police station and drew a splendid pencil sketch of Sergt. Dennis McEnery. Two weeks ago, following the payment of a fine for speeding, Palenske made a sketch of Larkin.
"I'm going to get on good speaking terms with this Evanston police department or stop going through here," said Palenske. "Probably if I sketch every member of the force I may win their friendship. I get all the way from $10 up for such skektches, so you might say I am giving a pretty good fee after all."- Featured Link
