New Trier High School is asking all parents, students and school personnel to participate in a scientific survey to assess school climate. In partnership with the Center for Social and Emotional Education, New Trier is administering the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory to parents and students during the week of March 8. Harlan Cohen, author of the popular college student handbook The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College, will speak from 7-9 p.m. March 3, in the Cornog Auditorium on New Trier's Northfield Campus.

Twenty-five New Trier students exhibited their artwork at the LISA show, a juried art exhibition sponsored by The Great Frame Up on Central Street in Evanston through Feb. 25. Sophomore Kerrin Auh won for sculpture; junior Annie Irwin for painting; sophomore Evelyn No for drawing; freshman Diana Kim for graphic communication; and senior Lauren Pope for photography. These students will have their work displayed in the "Best of the Best" show in mid-May at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago's North Loop, where they will be considered for scholarships along with the winners from other Chicagoland schools. Other participating students in this year's LISA show were: Hannah Block, Claire Boyle, Lucas Carpenter, Nerissa Denenberg, Margaret Fink, Lisa Harriman, Sarah Hebard, Sydney Jacobs, Devin Kerr, Courtney Lai, Sarah Leuchtner, Taylor Levy, Derek McGee, Margo Menkes, Emma Office, David Park, Megan Purcell, Sirada Sasitorn, Charlie Steinken, and Natasha Zoghlin.

Several New Trier students won awards from the Wilmette Arts Guild during the Guild's annual Student Art Exhibit, which was on display throughout the month of February. Three new awards were added to the generous prizes already awarded by the Guild. Winners were Allison Hines and Kat Brewer, Lauren Kay Janowiak, Kat Brewer and Katrina Keleher, Jenny Hargrave, Franny Levitin. In the Photography category, Katrina Keleher won first prize, junior Ali Gavillet took second, and junior Rachel Weitzman took third. Honorable mentions went to senior Emilie Bold and to juniors Ashley Harris, Ellie Pearlman, and Kaitlin Schaer. Other participating New Trier students included: Chloe Bacon, Hanna Block, Ellen Evangelides, Andrew Green, Kristine Kim, Sheridan Fok, Nikki Georgeson, Chloe Isaacs, Sarah Kokes, Jon Pietz, Tanuka Raj, Charles Shoup, Anna Sido, and Kristina Spillers.

The New Trier High School Speech Team, directed by Linda Oddo, coached by Joseph Griffith and Monica O'Connor, and assisted by coach emeritus Douglas Springer, won third place overall in team sweepstakes at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional Speech Tournament held at Maine West High School Feb. 6. Jacqueline Sutherland became tournament champion in original oratory for the second year in a row, and also won second place in special occasion speaking. Junior Wilfredo Ramos was tournament champion in poetry. Sophomores Theodora Austin and Fionna Millett won second place in dramatic duet acting. Also winning second place awards were sophomores Rebecca Schwartz (radio speaking) and Lindsey Olson (informative speaking). And with a fourth place win in the extemporaneous speaking finals, junior Nicholas Steen advanced to sectionals as well. Sutherland won third place overall in the finals for original oratory at the IHSA Sectionals tournament held at Thornwood High School in South Holland Feb. 13, and advanced to the IHSA State Finals in Peoria. Sutherland was also a finalist in special occasion speaking at the IHSA sectional tournament. She will be the only representative of New Trier competing in the IHSA Speech Individual Events State Finals.

The New Trier Public Forum Debate Team of David Walchak and Joseph Eichenbaum advanced to semifinals at the 36th Annual Harvard National Forensics tournament at Harvard University. The New Trier Policy Debate Team of Ira Slomski-Pritz and Dylan Carpenter advanced to the quarter finals and were among the top eight teams of over 200 competing at the California Invitational Debate Tournament at the University of California, Berkeley. Also, the New Trier Policy Debate Team of Randy Rossman and Teddy Kontopoulos advanced to triple-octafinals. The New Trier Freshman Policy Debate Team of Raj Patel and Nate Al-Najjar advanced to the Final Four at the Evanston Township High School 'Dead Presidents' Novice Debate Tournament. The New Trier Cross-Examination Debate Team of Ira Slomski-Pritz and Rebecca West advanced to the sweet sixteen at the 2010 Golden Desert National Invitational Debate Tournament held at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas. They were among the top 16 teams of 88 competing.
