Notes
Orrington Avenue in Evanston was named after philanthropist Orrington Lunt who discovered Evanston. Lunt was born in Bowdoinham, Maine, in 1815. He came to Chicago in 1842. He played a prominent part in business and religious life. He was active in the founding of Northwestern University. In particular, he gave the library building with an ample endowment. Orrington Avenue extends south of Davis Street. At one time, there was a park in that area. The street has a unique name; it is the only "Orrington Street" in the country. Many prominent people have lived on that street. They are: writer Emily Huntington Miller, Women's Christian Temperance Society Director Frances E. Willard, army captain, Bishop McCabe, Civil War army nurse Amanda Shelton Stewart, Methodist editor, David Thompson. Many prominent people currently live on Orrington Avenue. They are: Sewell Dwight Hillis, the successor of Henry Ward Beecher; Lorado Taft, artist; Henry Kitchell Webster, novelist; Mrs. Catherine Waugh McCulloch, writer of Illinois legal statue enfranchising women; Thomas Bates, former Evanston mayor; Miss Mary Childs, women's advocate; Charles Hart, opera singer; E. M. Board knows for fight against spoilsmen in the county; Sherman Kingsley, charity worker; A. B. Jones, capitalist; and educators, Solon Bronson, N. E. Simon, William A. Locy, U. S. Grant and James A. James. Orrington Avenue has some notable buildings: the public library, Y.M.C.A., and Willard and Pearson Halls of Northwestern University.
