Clarke L. Hayes, 911 Lake avenue, Wilmette, died May 4, at Evanston hospital after a heart attack. Mr. Hayes was born May 25, 1877, in Bremen, Ind. and was graduated from Purdue university with a degree in electrical engineering.

He was associated with the International Business Machines corporation and was a pioneer in the early development of the original company. He was a life-time member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Chicago.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sophie B. Hayes; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Walcott and Mrs. Mary-Alice Price, both of Portland, Ore.; one son, Joseph B. Hayes of Skokie; a sister Mrs. Zeta Grupe of Chicago; and three grandchildren. Services were held Friday, May 7, at Scott's Wilmette chapel with the Rev. Alexander Allison of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park cemetery.
