Ralph W. Mitchell, 77, of 900 Washington St., Evanston, father of a Wilmette resident, died Sunday in his home. He retired as chief chemist of the American Bakeries in 1956 after working 20 years with the firm. He had taught in the American Institute of Baking since his retirement. Mr. Mitchell was a founder of the American Association of Cereal Chemists and a member of the American Society of Bakery Engineers and the Evans Masonic Lodge. Born in Minneapolis, he was a 1912 graduate of the University of Minnesota and had lived in Evanston 26 years. Survivors include his widow, Esther; a daughter, Mrs. James C. Sprague, 614 Laurel Av., Wilmette; three sons, Wallace of Honolulu, Lee of Bayshore, Long Island, and David of Baron, Wis.; and 15 grandchildren. Services ere conducted Tuesday in the Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home in Evanston by the Rev. Curt V. Lundberg of Hemenway Methodist Church in Evanston. Burial is today in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
