Charles Benjamin Shifflett, 79, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Highland Park and Winnetka, died March 29 [1996]. Mr. Shifflett was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Highland Park. His maternal great-gandparent, Casper Zahnle, was an early settler in Highland Park. Mr. Shifflett graduated from Deerfield Shields High School in 1935 and worked at the HIghland Park Chevrolet garage until 1942. He served in World War II in the Navy as an aviation specialist. He worked at Great Lakes Naval Center as an auto mechanic for 30 years, and retired in 1972. He fixed bicycles in his basement as a hobby. Mr. Shifflett was the widower of the former Alice Coutre in Winnetka, whose great-grandparents, John Joseph Schwall and Wendell Allis [Wendell Alles] and Felix Coutre, were early settlers of Winnetka. Mrs. Schifflett died in 1990. Mrs. Schiflett [sic] is survived by two daughters, Barbara Nelson of Winnetka and Anne Rubendall of Sycamore, Ill., and two grandchildren, Renee and David Rubendall. Cremation was in Sarasota. Interment at Memorial Park, Skokie, will be in June.
