George Scully dies at Winnetka home; New Trier pioneer

George Scully of 1050 Elm street, Winnetka, one of the few remaining pioneer residents of New Trier township, passed away quietly at his home, at the age of 79 years, on December 28. Burial was at St. Joseph's cemetery, Wilmette, Friday, December 30.

Mr. Scully was the son of one of the early pioneers. Thomas Scully, and was one of the first white children born in this part of the north shore, west of the present Indian Hill district.

Thomas Scully took up a government claim when he came to the north shore. Another interesting fact concerning Thomas Scully, is that he saw the necessity of a school in his locality, and gave a site on which a school might be built. Later his son gave an additional quarter of an acre on which District School No. 37 now stands. George Scully served as president of the school board until his retirement in 1908.

In 1872 he was married to Jean Tearney of Northfield. They lived on the old homestead until going to Winnetka. Mr. Scully is survived by six sons, six daughters, twenty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
