- John "J. G." Gately II, 81, died Oct. 17 in his Winnetka home.
Mr. Gately was born Sept. 1, 1924 in Evanston Hospital, was raised in a house on Willow Road in Winnetka. He was named after his grandfather, John Gately, a lawyer who came to the Chicago area from Boston in May of 1883 After the war, Mr. Gately returned to Winnetka, where in 1948 he married Shirley Fitzgerald.
In 1956, the Gately family moved to its present home on Whitebridge Hill in Winnetka, where, in addition to raising their five children, Mr. Gately drew attention for raising a variety of animals, including goats, crows and ducks. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley; three daughters, Joan (Steven) Shapiro, Susan (John) White and Sarah (Charles Pratt); two sons, John III and Clifford G. (Christine); eight grandchildren, Constance Ethel Gately, Dorothy Henderson Shapiro, Michael Clifford Shapiro, John Robert White III, Kathleen Gately White, Margaret Allen Tabb, Julia Seng Gately and Elizabeth Hughes Gately; and one brother, Michael R. (Joan H.)
