Shakespeare performance

The Performing Arts Division of New Trier High School will present Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Oct. 13; 4:30 p.m. Oct. 14; and 2 p.m. Oct. 15 in the McGee Theatre at the Winnetka Campus.

“This has been a fascinating process,” says director Nina Lynn. “So many of the students have studied the play in their English classes and bring that familiarity with them to rehearsals. It’s been fun to be with them as they discover new things about the text, and I love to hear them debating the meaning of the metaphors as we’re staging. It’s also been a great challenge for them to take their intellectual understanding of the words and figure out how to bring that to the stage. Of course, what they’re really loving, though, is the sword fighting.”

Performing arts coordinator Anne James-Noonan explains: “We are very excited to be working with David Blixt as our fight choreographer. He has such a high level of expertise and a true passion for working with high school students.”

“I love working on this show,” says senior Tim Mlynarski, “because it’s got something for everyone. Romance, violence, comedy— it has it all. Of course, because I get to play the angry Cousin Tybalt, I really like the stage combat!”

Julia Katlin, Daniella Maestre, Catherine McKenna, and Maria Nikolova are assistant directors for the production, and the stage manager is Erika Keller.

The cast for the Wednesday and Friday performances includes: Ford Bowers, Emma Bressler, David Cutler, Valerie Feygel, Maggie Graham, Catherine Jameson, Rachel Jones, Martin Keegan Kelly, Chloe Knight, Emily Lungmus, Joe Marshall, Anna McCarthy, Tim Mlynarski, Lindsey Olson, Jessica Perelman, Natalie Polechonski, Patrick Richwine, Michael Rogerson, Katie Schulze, Alexi Siegel, Matt Smith, and Hannah Williams.

The cast for the Thursday and Saturday performances includes: Ford Bowers, Emma Bressler, Tommy Clabby, David Cutler, Valerie Feygel, Rory Gilchrist, Emma Horvath, Catherine Jameson, Rachel Jones, Martin Keegan Kelly, Chloe Knight, Emily Lungmus, Olivia Macklin, Anna McCarthy, Ellen Naughton, Jessica Perelman, Michael Rogerson, Katie Schulze, Alexi Siegel, Matt Smith, Ian Vlahakis, and Hannah Williams.

The sets, lights, and costume crew members are: Niko Blanas, Amanda D’Egidio, Michol Deutsch, Alexander Estes, Rachel Goldstein, Margaret Hall, Katie Hughes, John Parks, Berrit Keller, Mary Lee, Drew Marschke, Robyn Mech, Gregg Miller, Abbiey Ortenberg, Christopher Perrin, Josh Philoon, Juliana Sawma, Emily Trevor, Brian Tsuru, and Renee Van Arsdale.
