16 WILMETTE LIFE October 2, 1925 Yes, My Dears, Our Cops . Were in Tears,· 'Twas New Gas Club ·M aybe you won't believe it, but Chief Henry Brautigam and others of the police department were actually crying their eyes out for some new police clubs, this week. Yes, sir, they wept so sincerely that they may get them too. A new police club that sh ts tear gas was what made them cry. F. W. Heppurn of the Federal Laboratories Sales company demonstrated the club in the basement of the Village hall, and its effect was instantaneous, driving the chief and others who watched the demonstration from the room in tears. The club contains a cartridge in which is a small amount of explosive and a powder .which burns, forming ·the tear gas. \Vhen ' a button is pressed the gas shoots out from the end of the club for a considerable distance, and then forms a dense cloud, in which it is impossible to see or breath. it blinds temporarily but is not permanently injurious. The chief was so impressed that he will ask the Village board to purchase two of the new clubs. ] TO NEW COMERS IN .WILMETTE I RALLY DAY is an established annual event in village life; a day officially ushering in the season of renewed activity in Kingdom building.
