A tremendous .ontion greeted Martinelli when he appeared at New Trier High school Wednesday evening, March 7, to give the last program on the Artist Recital series sponsored by the Winnetka Music club. He is not only immensley popular because of his magnificent voic~, but also because of his extremely channing personality. He grinned and smiled and bowed, taking the audience to his heart as the audience took him to its heart, and in that large bare auditorium be created an atmosphere of warm friendliness. Gneb~F._.. An extraordinary man with an extraordinary voice. There was nothing cold about the north shore audience last Wednesday, for Teaa Staacllas· everyone seemed stirred unusually, and · near the end, when Martinelli obliged with "Vesta Ia Giubba," air from Pagliacci, they were even moved to call "Bravo I Bravo!" "Yes," said Giovanni Martinelli, "it is a responsive audience. Very warm, but you see I am among friends." His program consisted of an aria, "0 Paradiso," from "L'Africaine"; "Aprile," by Tosti ; Debussy's "Nuit D'Etoiles"; Leoncavallo's "Lasciati Amar"; the much loved "Celeste Aida"; DeCrescenzo's "Rondine al Nido" ; two English songs, "The Moon," by Bagby ; "That Night," by Vanderpool As encores he generously gave "E Lucevan le Stelle," from "Tosca"; "Just You an4 1," sung in English ; and "Woman Is Fiekle." Martinelli and Ada Paggi, mezzosoprano, sang the duet, "Ai Nostri Monti," from ~·11 Trovatore," and as a final encore, they gave a duet from the first act of "II Trovatore." Their voices w.ere beautifully blended, and both songs were brilliantly pven. Mme. Pani gave several groups during the evening, in a voice that was strangely sweet and clear for ·a mezzooprano. She sang with refinement, and graciously. While there is not a deal of volume back ' of her voice, it is so exquisitely dear and so gently used that it P-Ve us grqt pleasure. Her groups held such favorites as "Do Not Q_o, l.fy Love," by Hageman; "From the Land of the SkY Blue Water," by Cadman; "Habanera," from Carmen; "J'ai Pleur en Reve," by Hue; -"The Jasmine Door," by A. Scott; "La Partida," by F. Alvarez; and the Cavatina from "Les Ht llenots," by Meyerbeer. She generously gave the piquant "Ciavelit~," "Ay! Ayl Ayl" by Perez-Freire; and "Steride Ia Vanyre" from "II Trovatore," for encore. Salvatore Fucito gave both Mr. Martinelli and Mme. Paggi excellent accompaniments. The Winnetka Music club can well congratulate· itself upon an evening of such high standard. Mrs. Frank H. Seabold entertained sixteen members of the North Shore IP'OUp of Chicago Women of Rotary at luncheon Wednesday, at her home, Ill Sheridaa road.
