MOUAT & FLAHERTY Incorporated WILMbnE- Opposite Village Hall- Wilmette 766 CHICAGO-] 5 North Dt~rborn Street-Central . 78 70 C. H. Brethold, the veteran real estate man and north shore ,builder, with offices at 545 Main street, Wilmette, who has witnessed not only the . a vety small growth of Chicago from city, but bas also participated in the development of the north shore, and has kept posted on the expansion of the fine acreage sections hereabouts, is just as enthusiastic as ever over all these favored spots, but he cannot say as much for some others. Mr. Bretbold, like every other north shore resident, is anything else but a pessimist, but because of some experience he once had in the way of farm investments, he admits he is somewhat of a skeptic when it comes to advocating the advisability of investing in farm lands, remotely removed from Chicago. Chicago area farm land he knows is still good, because Chicago is gradually growing out to meet these sections, and here, Mr. Brethold will, some day, be building more of the Brethold type of hottse for which he long ago established a name for himself on the north shore. He also realiz:es that good Illinois farms, where banner crops of wheat and corn are grown to aid in feeding the ever increasing population of Chicago, will continue to retain the value and perhaps increase many fold in years to come. Otllera Not aa Good But down in parts of southeast' Missouri? That, he in,ists, is different. A few years ago, in the sale of some Chicago property, he acquired in the transaction two farms in the part of Missouri referred to. One tract compriseCI 120 acres and the other was a full quarter section. Taxes have been paid from year to year on these farms, and, fortunately, the amounts were small, but the rental - value has been correspondingly oomi· naL Recently a "wide-awake" real estate man down there inquired if these farms were for sale and for bow much. Of course they were for sale, b'!t negotiations soon demonstrated that Jt was useless to try to get "much" for them. s Finally, Mr. Brethold sent tile deed· to a bank near where the farms are located, and told the real estate man to get him $100 each, for the farms. Not $100 per acre, but $~00 for t~e entire· farm, on each of wh1ch there 1s a small cottage and some tillable land, where a little corn and tobacco may be grown, but more hills where goats ma} graze, and some wooded a!eas wlt~re timber abounds for makmg barrel staves and hoops, providing, however, one has the inclination to work at that sort of labor. Neither deal has yet been closed, but Mr. Brethold hopes he soon will ha,·c $200 for his two farms, and when he gets it,. he says he will re-invest the money in a tiny little speck of north shore real estate, something he knows, by long years of experience, is worth real money any day in the week. tt· P· Fana Make an Artistic Wall by Skinding Proceu Skintling-what does it do to a wall of common brick? A great deal-one can honestly say. It adds a touch of variety, a convincing interest to the age old dignity of brick. There are many forms of skintlingall varying the general surface effect without incrcaasing the cost. Again, the broad e~osure of wall is relieved by shadows which the irregularly placed bricks cast. An artistic effect, this, possible in even the simplest and most modest dwellings. AMPLE FUNDS TO LOAN 5Yl%--6% CONSTRUCTION RESIDENCES, ~TORES.
