The special survey, made by the federation's well-equipped homes committee in conjunction with Its general state survey to d~termine living conditions in Illinois communities, included Cairo, Benton, Blue Island, Chamaign, Chicago Heights, Collinsville, Dixon, DeKalb, Elmhurst, Galesburg, Highland Park, Macomb, M urphysboro, Ottawa, Harvey, Urbana~ LaSalle, Lincoln, Kankakee, Streator, Waukegan, Wilmette, Mattoon and Winnetka. The survey also showed that more homes in these communities have automobiles than washing machines or vacuum cleaners. Automobiles are owned by 55 of every 100 families repQrting, electric washing machines by 32 per 100, and electric vacuum cleaners by 35 per 100. The figures also showed that only six more homes per 100 have electric irons than automobiles. Seventy-eight per cent of the houses are electrically lighted. Housewives are taking maximum advantage of gas for cooking where piped gas is available, according to the survey which showed that there are 72 gas connections per 100 homes and 72 gas ranges in use. Only 24 per 100 families use this available gas for water heating, however. Four in every 100 homes were found still to be lighted by gas, while the average for the state, as a whole, was only three per 100.
