Simon ~ On Monday, June 25, Mrs. Maude Jacobs of the staff of the Garfield Park conservatory, gave some excellent advice on summer gardening in her talk before the members of the Kenilworth Home and Garden Clubs and their guests, the members of the Wilmette Garden club. A few of her suggestions on what to do during July and August in the garden, we insert here, as well worth following: 1. Weed constantly in July. 2. Order your bulbs before July 15. 3. Darwin Tulips are better planted in quantities. You can buy twentyfive at the hundred rate. 4. Bedding size hyancinths are. best in the garden. Plant a bulb · at a depth three times its width. 5. Order your madonna lily bulbs now. Plant them in August close to the earth's surface. Madonna lilies, 1 whitish in color, not pinkish, are the ones to buy. They need not be covered in winter, or, if covered only by a few twigs. 6. Japanese bulbs are out in the ground in March. 7. Autumn crocusJ planted in August, . will bloom in September or October. 8. Pia.:+- the seeds from your own plants during July and August. Delphinium seed, especially, should be fresh when planted. Let one or two pods of the first flowers go to seed. . Pinch off the other seed pods. 9. Cut off the veronica spike before the last inch opens. To keep petunias in blossom, do not let them form seed pods. lf they grow too tall cut them back and let them branch out. . 10. Make cuttings in August from fresh The ('burch Coun'c n will meet next ·wednesday evening at 8 P. M. This is an important meeting. The Building Fund Pledge cards will be submitted for approval.
