At Womtht's Club Wed~esday B,. R. L P. I · ._ __ _ _______ _ 0 · . was a busy_ day at the Woman s club of Wilmette, and many members of the club spent the entire day at the club home. Mrs. Marguerite Harmon Bro took up part of the mor~ing period with her interesting OOSe~vahOI_lS on the educational prob7 lem. m Chma, and Mrs. George Lamb revtewed "Porgy," during the noon drama hour. Mrs. Esther L. Harcourt, dramatic reader, gave a reading of Booth Tarkington's "Monsieur Beaucaire." This popular story is a picture of the typical eighteenth century Frenchman, lover of adventure, chivalry and romance. The scene is laid in Bath England, where Monsieur Beaucaire' haughty, gay, roguish, regal, revenge~ ful but always polished, subtle, a.nd a beau, goes for a little gaming. .He gains an entry into English society as the Duke of Chateaurien, and becomes the idol of all, even of the exquisitely regal Lady Mary, with whom he falls in love. Just as Lady Mary is about to confe3s her love for him, Beaucaire is denounced as a barber and servant, but after dramatic episodes is revealed as the Duke of Orleans, cousin of Louis XV of France. Mrs. Harcourt gave a masterly interpretation of the character of Beaucaire, and vividly brought out that of the Duke of Wintersmett who was discovered by Beaucaire to be a cheat at cards. Her voice was flexible and lent itseJf gracefully to all the nuances of the moods, and her reading was pleasing in every way. Phyllis Feingold, violinist, appeared at the end of the program in a group of selections. She is an instructor in the American branch of the Modern Institute of Paris. Mis3 Feingold would seem to have everything a true artist needs-personality, poetry, technical background and musical intelligence. One of the finest of the women violinists of our time. Miss Feingold's accompanist, Miss Olga Fandor, gave a fine performance also. The group of numbers giv~n were three: "En Bateau," DeBus5y: "Gypsy Serenade," V a 1 d e z ; and "Scherzo Tarantelle," by Wieniawski. As an encore she played the wellknown "Frasquita," an ~rrangement of the composition by Lehar made by Kre.isler for the violin. A - t. . 0 616 DAVIS S'IBEBT, BVARS'IOR Ualv.
