I Janua~y 4, 1929 WILMETTE was strikingly different from the return through · the city a week before on Christmas night. There were stars in the sky, but no moon. Lights were few and far between. The country presented a cold ·and lovely aspect. When a Christmas tree's lights shone from a window now, how welcome they were! Each town had a community Christmas tree, its lights resembling those of Roman candles or of "flower pots," and good they looked to the returning party. The anxious member of the group at length gave up her vigilant guard and resigned herself to fate. She looked out of the window and for the first time that !Jay saw the beauty of the. country. LIFE 9 Mr. and Mrs. Walter Marx, 522 Essex road, Kenilworth, entertained nine guests at dinner in honor of Jean and Walter, Jr., last Friday evening preceding the Williams' college dramatic club presentation of "The Pigeon" at North Shore Country Day school. A · soft snow had fallen during the night and made the whole country fair and white, especially the wooded sections where trees and bushes were laden with heavy, clinging snow. The lake was brown and very rough, with many whitecaps showing at a distance. Even the least enthusiastic one in the car was impressed with the scene. "It is quite as beautiful as it is on a spring day," said the driver who was always thinking of his· garden. But one of the party was silent, for all that she saw was the ditch by the road, covered with drifting snow, the ditch into which the car might slip. For the driving was slippery on · the smooth snow, and one of the chains had broken soon after we had started. In stretches where there was no snow .she waited in surprise for the next .ditch to appear. She saw nothing of the country. The trip back to Wilmette that night cards received from alumnae in foreigp lands. Miss Clara B. Baker reviewed, "The ·Fire King,"' which is this year's student play for children to be given Saturday, February 16. It will be sponsored by the north shore alumnae. Mrs. Harry G. Phillips, national alumn~e president, and Mrs. Norman Stover, an ·alumna from Pittsburgh, were among the guests. Mrs. L. L. Lane, social chairman, was in charge of arrangements. Word has been received from Los .Angeles, of the recent illness at the Good Samaritan hospital of ~Irs James Evans, mother of Mrs Harry W. Mons of 157 Woodstock avenue, Kenilworth.
