February 15, 1929 WIL~ETTE · On~ of the loveliest of all children's plays, Maurice Maeterlinck's "The Blue Bird," h.as been chosen as the third play of the Children's theater season in Evanston·. It will be presented at Haven school only for the first two performances, at 10 an4 at 2:30, March 9. March 16 it will open the handsome blue and gold theater in the new Nichols school, and all of the season ticket holders for that day will see it there instead of at Haven. Of all plays pr.esented thus far by the Children's theater, "The Blue Bird" is held to rank highest in beauty of idea and in pictorial loveliness. Some of its symbolism is too subtle for children, but it has so much to appeal to them that it can truly be considered a children's play, it is explained. · The story is that of a little boy and girl who go out to seek the blue bird. They search in the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night and the Kingdom of the Future, and in each pla'ce the blue birds which they find turn black or die as soon as they are taken away. At last, returning home, they are amazed to find that their own black bird has turned blue, and they quickly give it to their neighbor in order to bring happiness to her sick little daughter. The Children's theater plays this semester are being produced by the Children's theater class at the school of speech, taught by Winifred Ward and Dean Farnsworth. The settings are being designed under Mr. Farnsworth's direction and executed by the students under Douglas Bryant, production manager of the theater. Imaginative and beautiful settings and lighting effects will feature this production, as well as fanciful and unusual costumes. A large cast of children and adults from various schools is rehearsing daily under Miss Ward, director of the theater.
