The role of her mother, Mrs. Rooke-Walter, was admirably portrayed by Dale Plympton, who put over the worldliness of a woman who, though 70, finds life infinately amusing. Joseph K. Shippen as Haddon again showed that he is a sincere, artistic actor, one who gives out an illusion of perfect reality to his characters. Miss Sally Nohelty and Mary C. White made their roles of the society women distinctive, and Arthur Landers convulsed the audience with his interpretation of the Earl, Bryan Ropes. LIFE GUILD PRODUCTION IS "WELL WORTH SEEING" "Lilies of the Field" ia Portrayed in Excellent Fashion Along North Shore By R. L P. · With John Hastings Turner's clever comedy, "The Lilies of the Field," the · North Shore Theater closes its eighth season. As witnessed in Glencoe on the third night of a run that includes all north shore towns from Lake Forest to Evanston, the play is excellent good fun, not too frothy and inconsequential, but witty and well worth seeing. Unfortunately the play on Thursday evening was pitched too high, and it was with difficulty that the audience was able to hear some of the actors. Robert G. MacMillan assumed the rot'e of the decidedly unworldly but charming vicar, the Rev. Mr. Head, in whose family all the action takes place~ If Mr. MacMillan had allowed himself to be natu-ral he would have made an immense hit in the role, for his interpretation of the character was splendid; but his voice was pitched too high and had too much power back of it for the words to be distinguishable. Because of his over-anxiety to be heard, he drew the other players up to him, so that the entire play seemed to keep the actors keyed up, and the audience as well. There were many good laughs, if only the audience had been allmved the time for them and the relaxation. From the acting staridpoint. the production was impeccable. Miss Irene Wicker and Miss Agnes Biesemeier starred as the vicar's twin daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth. They seem to possess an unlimited supply of the joi de vivre, the very spirit of youth. Hearing their grandmother has brought ten yards of crepe de chine for one twin, and has promised a visit in London to the other, each immediately strives to win the London trip. The vicar accidently tells them that whoever .makes the best impression on a not-so-old antiqu~rian, Barnaby Haddon, is to get the London trip. In a perfectly friendly spirit c f rivalry the girls .compete for Haddon's favor.
