40 WILMETTE LIFE July 12, 1929 Sports and Other Wilmette Recreation Board News St. John's Team Track Events Will With the Athletic Leagues Pace Setter in Feature Next Week's I Playgro,und Program '------------~------------' Horseshoe Games The third annual playground ' track meet is the principal attraction on next ·week's calendar for the Recreation board's s ummer playground activities. It will he hl'ld at 2 o'clock \Vednesday afternoon at thc \'illage Green. M o re than 300 boys and girls are expected to compete in th l' events of the afternoon and, since it is the major l'\'ent of the s ummer schedule, more than twice that number of spectators is expected t o attend . Parents and friends oi the playground children are extenrlerl special invitations hy Daniel M . Davis, director_ of recreation. " The program of events includes contests for children of every age from six and under, through the fourteenth year, which is the last year children are eligible to attend t-he playgrounds. Races and field · rvents will be interspersed with non~lty races to give earh participant equal chance with the outstanding athletes. Each of the three playgrounds, Central, Village Green, and Vattmann will enter three contestants for each event and the winners of the three upper places in each contest w ::t be presented blue, red, and white ribbons respectively. No trophy is a warded the playground · vinning the n!e~t but the champion will be accorded ten points toward the final trophy giyen to the playground winning the most points during the summer. \' attmatt playground has been the winncr oi this trophy for the first two year s of the playground program and is striving to obtain permanent ownership of the cup by winning the highe st number of point s this season. Although the track meet is the prin ~ cipal event of the week, an interest feature for each playground will be its own local sandcraft contest. Everv child on the playground is eligil le t~ compete in the locai contest and winners in both senior and junior divisions will be allowed to enter a Yillage wide contest the next week to determine the best sand niodeler in the viJJage. . Great 'tnterest is also· being displayed m the handicraft activity of the week which is basket-weaving with ratfia and reed. The best baskets an(I other article made with raffia will be displayed at the annual Q}ayground handicraft exhibit held the last week of the summer playgrounds.
