They br.oug_ht Public Service Places Conduits Under Streets to Care for Future Growth Installation of the new underground network system of conduits to serve downtown Evanston with electric light and power has been responsible for the removing and replacing of the pavements in the business district for the last few weeks. The Public Service Co., is installing the network to take care of rapid expansion of the busine ss district at present and in anticipation of future demands . This installation is being matle at a cost of almost a million dollars and is a part of the underground system wh.u:h is being built this year and for which $4,250,000 has b~_en appropriated by the comparJY for the entire district. The network starts at the Public Service substation No. 2 at Clark and Maple and runs east under Clark street to Sherman avenue, south on Sherman to Church street and west on Church to the alley west of the Public Service store and north under the alley to the substation. From Clark street the conduits run south on Benson a venue to Davis street, west on Davis to Elmwood, south on Elm,,·ood to Grove a neT- east on Grove to Hinman a yenue A line runs north from GroYe street under the alley west of the Gro\'C street fire station to serYe the stores on the south side of Davis street and the east side of Sherman avenue in that block. Another line runs north from Grove to Davis under Sherman avenue and east on Davis to the alley west of Hinman annue where it connects with a duct line running from Grove to Church street. From the corner of Grove street and Chicago avenue another branch of the network runs north under Chicago avenue to Church street and east on Church street to Orrington avenue. T_ he sections of this great network are made up of £_onduit lines having nine, sixteen and twenty-four ducts through ·w hich cable will be run. The system has capacity enough to furnish the entire present business district with light and power with provision for the new buildings now going up. and enough surplus capacity to serve downtown Evanston for many years to come. This network. forming a complete circuit of the business district. will be completed about August 1 and service on the new system will begin about August 31 or shortly after.
