October 25, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE 47 FRANKEN BROS.,·Inc. Telephone Deerfield 241 First· Street West of Railroad and Then South to the End of the Street TULIP PLANTING TIME. ~he month of .octob~r is the be.st hme for plantmg tultps. A tuhp 1nust have titne to stool out and produce their root system in the Fall, before it actually freezes up. For that same reason tulips planted from six to eight inches deep are n1ore apt to live and thrive fronl year to .year than those planted shallow. WINTER KILLING OF TULIPS. Holland suffered their great· est loss this year from the winter killing of tulips, than it has for several years past. The reason was, no doubt, that the Hollanders have· fron1 time to time, been planting their tulips more shallow each year on account of digging. A tulip harvests much easier when planted shallow, as they dig their tulips with their hands. This fact indicates that they have .a very light, fluft·y soil. MULCHING TULJPS· Any kind of litter or finely rotted manure is all right for n1ulching tulips, hut should be removed at the first heavy rainfall that thaws out the gt·ound in the Spring.
