==================~======================================================= · GIVE "PENNY-LAD" Natioaal CoiJeae Playen Eatraace Childrea · willa Ciaclenlla-like Performance February 21,1930 WILMETTE LIFE 7 B:J Critic Delighted groups of children attendted the two performances of ' 'Penny Lad;' a play adapted from an old Swedish story and presented by students of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college last Saturday at the college under the auspices of the north shore alumnae as a benefit for the college building fund. ~Ir s. Marguerite Calkins Taylor and Miss Dorothy Whitcomb were respon sible for the scenery, which was one of the most attractive features of th e play. The first act pictured the exterior of a Hansel-and-Gretel cabin, with a blind old man seated in front, fashioning the nets that supported himself and his wife and their small grandson, Karl. the Penny Lad. The main road passed by the cabin, and across it was a toll gate, which the lad opened, receiving pennies from the paisers-through . Friends of his are attending the horse fair in the nearby town the day of the play, and urge him to go with them. But Penny Lad has no trousers, and his grandmother has nothing to offer except an old petticoat. · The second act opens on the colorful horse fair, with gypsies in costume singing to the music of a fiddle played by one of them. A tambourine dance by fou ~ of the gypsies is an attractive part oi the fair, and the show itself tell s the storv of Pantaloon and Columbine and ·Harlectuin and Joey, the clown. The lovely dancing of Columbine and Harlequin, as well as their beautiful costumes, and the clowning of Pantaloon and Joey pleased thet young audience. The children were thrown into gales of hilarity by the antics of two live horses, quite live horses, each having two little active girls inside him. Penny Lad had decided to go to the fair in his grandmother's petticoat and quite enjoyed the show and the horses · until the other children twitted him about his feminine attire. Then he fled, crying, back to the' Hansel-and-Gretel cabin and his grandfather. Later in the day a great honor is coming to the town-the king's embassy will pass through. The sheriff claims the honor of opening the gate for this dignitary, but Penny Lad has ideas of his own. And to carry them out he must have trousers. Grandfather comes to the rescue by loaning to the boy his old regimental uniform, sword. long trousers, and all. A large crowd gathers around .the gate to greet the king's embassy and in the confusion Penny Lad ma~ages to be the one to open .the gate, with a grand flourish and the salute taught him by his gra1:1dfather. The captain notes the lad and the uniform, and reme!llhers the grandfather as a former comrade in his regiment, and as one who many years before had saved his life. He offers grandly to take Karl and give him a horse and a dozen pairs of trousers. Upon the boy's refusal, the captain promises to relieve the poverty of the old pair and their · grandson. The Cind~ralla-like theme of the drama and the competent mode of presentation pleased the young audience. Between acts the children themselves had part in the entertainment, singing, and whistling, and clapping to the music of t.he piano. Between the morning and afternoon performances a Valentine luncheon was served, and following the second performance ice cream and candies and cookies were served at tiny table~ set with Valentine decorations. Cookies and candy also were on sale in the corridor before the play. [~~~ R~\lf' IJ 0 [~ ~j\ l. Courteous Persor1a/ Servt .c e ' ·r· E LIJ C(Q).
